Scaling and root planing is a highly effective treatment for preventing the progression of gum disease before it reaches more severe stages, and is often one of the first treatments Dr. James Wells may recommend if you are diagnosed with gum disease. This procedure, commonly referred to as deep cleaning, consists of two primary components:
- Scaling: This process involves the removal of plaque and tartar (dental calculus) from the tooth surfaces. Plaque is a sticky, colorless film of bacteria and sugars that forms on your teeth, and tartar is the hardened form of plaque that has been left on the teeth too long.
- Root Planing: During root planing, we clean beneath the gumline, smoothing the roots of your teeth to remove bacterial toxins.
The goals of scaling and root planing are straightforward:
- Eliminate the bacteria responsible for gum disease.
- Remove built-up plaque and tartar.
- Stop the progression of gum disease.
Although most scaling and root planing treatments are comfortably completed without anesthetic, we understand that each patient’s comfort threshold varies. Our practice offers several anesthetic and other comfort options to ensure you remain at ease during your treatment. Depending on the extent of the treatment needed, we may schedule several appointments, focusing on one section of the mouth at a time.
In some cases, scaling and root planing may be paired with other periodontal therapies, such as antibiotic treatments, to enhance the healing process. For many patients, scaling and root planing alone is sufficient to prevent further progression of periodontal disease.
